All-Time MMA Pound-for-Pound Ranking TOP 10 | Greatest Fighters in MMA History

Sport

In this article, I introduce my personal all-time MMA pound-for-pound ranking TOP 10.

Pound-for-pound is a ranking concept used to consider “who is the best fighter” if weight-class and body-size differences did not exist. In MMA, there is a huge physical difference between heavyweight and flyweight, so it is not possible to judge greatness simply by imagining direct matchups.

That is why an all-time PFP ranking should not be based only on records. It should also consider prime dominance, level of opposition, technical completeness, impact on the sport, and the ability to perform in different areas of MMA.

This ranking includes my personal opinion, but I also consider each fighter’s achievements, prime strength, fighting style, height, background, and overall influence on MMA.

Selection criteria: Prime dominance, achievements, level of opposition, technical completeness, influence on the sport, and pound-for-pound value

※This is not an official UFC ranking. It is my personal all-time MMA pound-for-pound ranking, so the order includes subjective opinion.

What Is Pound-for-Pound?

Pound-for-pound is a term used in combat sports. It refers to an evaluation of the best fighter if athletes from different weight classes were compared under the same body-size and weight conditions.

In reality, fighters from heavyweight and flyweight almost never compete under the same conditions. Therefore, PFP does not simply mean “who would win in an actual fight.” It is more about how strong and complete a fighter would be if size differences were removed.

When thinking about all-time MMA PFP rankings, the following points are important:

  • Prime dominance
  • Level of opposition
  • Title achievements
  • Quality of wins
  • Overall skill in striking, wrestling, and grappling
  • Influence on the sport
  • Long-term consistency
  • Techniques that can be valued across weight classes

1. Fedor Emelianenko

Date of birth: September 28, 1976
Hometown: Russia
Main division: Heavyweight
Height: 182cm / 6’0″
Background: Sambo, judo
Main style: Heavy striking, throws, top control, submissions

Fedor Emelianenko is one of the greatest heavyweight fighters in MMA history, and for me, he deserves the No. 1 spot in an all-time pound-for-pound ranking.

During his PRIDE era, Fedor was a heavyweight with unusual speed, fluid movement, explosive striking, and a complete grappling game based on sambo and judo.

Heavyweight is an extremely dangerous division where one punch can change everything, making long-term dominance very difficult. In that context, Fedor’s long unbeaten run against world-class opponents deserves enormous respect.

His wins over fighters such as Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Mirko Cro Cop, Mark Coleman, and Kevin Randleman remain especially important when evaluating his legacy.

Evaluation Points

  • Maintained his position at the top of heavyweight for a long period
  • Excellent balance of striking, throws, and grappling
  • Dominant during the PRIDE era
  • Long unbeaten streak is especially valuable in heavyweight

Personality / Character

Fedor rarely showed strong emotion, either inside or outside the ring. His calm expression and composed fighting style made him even more intimidating.

Trivia

His nickname is “The Last Emperor.” He was also extremely popular among Japanese PRIDE fans and had a major influence on Japanese MMA culture.

Overall Evaluation

Modern MMA has evolved since Fedor’s prime, but considering his dominance at heavyweight, the level of his opponents, his performances, and his influence on the sport, I believe he is worthy of the No. 1 spot in this ranking.

2. Jon Jones

Date of birth: July 19, 1987
Hometown: United States
Main divisions: Light Heavyweight / Heavyweight
Height: 193cm / 6’4″
Background: Wrestling
Main style: Long-range striking, wrestling, elbows, clinch work, all-around MMA

Jon Jones is one of the most talented fighters in UFC history.

At light heavyweight, he used his incredible reach, creative striking, wrestling, clinch work, elbows, and ground control to defeat many former champions and elite contenders.

He became UFC champion at a very young age and then dominated the light heavyweight division for a long time. His ability to read an opponent’s strengths and adjust his strategy is one of the clearest examples of elite MMA IQ.

Evaluation Points

  • Dominated the UFC light heavyweight division
  • Defeated many former champions
  • Unique style built around reach, athleticism, and adaptability
  • Also captured the UFC heavyweight title

Personality / Character

Inside the cage, Jones is extremely calm and analytical. Outside the cage, however, his career has included many controversies, which makes the evaluation of his overall legacy more complicated.

Trivia

Jones is famous for his extremely long reach. His front kicks, elbows, and distance control make full use of that physical advantage.

Overall Evaluation

If we focus only on competitive achievements, many people would rank Jones as the greatest MMA fighter of all time. However, considering the greatness of Fedor’s speed and power in his prime, I placed him at No. 2 in this ranking.

3. Anderson Silva

Date of birth: April 14, 1975
Hometown: Brazil
Main division: Middleweight
Height: 188cm / 6’2″
Background: Muay Thai, boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, taekwondo
Main style: Counters, Muay Thai, front kicks, clinch work, distance control

Anderson Silva is one of the most artistic strikers in MMA history.

He built a long title reign in the UFC middleweight division, and his ability to avoid attacks while finishing opponents with precise counters was shocking at the time.

His accuracy, timing, rhythm changes, and psychological control were outstanding. He was not just strong; he had a type of greatness that made his fights feel almost artistic.

Evaluation Points

  • Long-term dominance at UFC middleweight
  • Artistic striking and finishing ability
  • Historic winning streak and title defenses
  • Elevated the value of striking in MMA

Personality / Character

During fights, Silva often showed a relaxed and confident attitude, inviting opponents to attack before finishing them in an instant. Outside the cage, he often appeared calm and gentle, but inside the cage he was an extremely dangerous counter striker.

Trivia

He is known by the nickname “The Spider.” His long limbs and unusual distance control made his style feel both strange and highly effective.

Overall Evaluation

At his peak, Anderson Silva had one of the greatest abilities in MMA history to make elite opponents look helpless. He is a fighter who must always be included in discussions alongside Fedor and Jon Jones.

4. Jose Aldo

Date of birth: September 9, 1986
Hometown: Brazil
Main divisions: Featherweight / Bantamweight
Height: 170cm / 5’7″
Background: Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, capoeira
Main style: Low kicks, boxing, takedown defense, counters

Jose Aldo is one of the greatest featherweights in MMA history.

From the WEC era to the UFC era, he ruled the featherweight division for a long time with brutal low kicks, strong takedown defense, and explosive striking.

At his peak, Aldo was extremely difficult for wrestlers to take down, and in striking exchanges he had the power to change the fight in an instant. He combined destructive offense with excellent defense, which made him one of the most complete lighter-weight fighters ever.

Evaluation Points

  • Long title reign at featherweight
  • Devastating low kicks and striking power
  • Excellent takedown defense
  • Helped raise the status of lighter divisions

Personality / Character

In the cage, Aldo was sharp and dangerous. Outside the cage, he often appeared calm and composed. He is also one of the representative figures of Brazilian MMA.

Trivia

When he was young, Aldo once dreamed of becoming a soccer player. Later, he moved into combat sports and became one of the greatest featherweight champions ever.

Overall Evaluation

Aldo is sometimes remembered too much for his loss to Conor McGregor, but his long dominance and accomplishments at featherweight are enormous. I believe he deserves more recognition in all-time PFP discussions.

5. Khabib Nurmagomedov

Date of birth: September 20, 1988
Hometown: Republic of Dagestan, Russia
Main division: Lightweight
Height: 177cm / 5’10”
Background: Wrestling, sambo, judo
Main style: Takedowns, cage wrestling, top control, ground-and-pound

Khabib Nurmagomedov is one of the most dominant lightweight fighters in MMA history.

He retired undefeated with a 29-0 record and overwhelmed opponents in the UFC lightweight division with his grappling. His cage wrestling, leg control, top pressure, and ability to exhaust opponents were especially powerful.

He was not the type of fighter who relied on flashy striking finishes, but his ability to take away an opponent’s freedom and force them into his world was among the best ever.

Evaluation Points

  • Retired undefeated at 29-0
  • Showed overwhelming dominance at lightweight
  • Extremely reliable grappling system
  • Defeated elite opponents such as Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje

Personality / Character

Khabib gives a strong impression of discipline and loyalty. He deeply valued the teachings of his father, Abdulmanap, and is known for his strong commitment to family and team.

Trivia

His father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, was a legendary coach who influenced not only Khabib but many Dagestani fighters.

Overall Evaluation

Khabib’s late-career dominance was incredible. On the other hand, his number of title defenses and total career length are sometimes compared with other all-time greats. Even so, his undefeated record, technical completeness, and dominance make him one of the greatest ever.

6. Ilia Topuria

Date of birth: January 21, 1997
Birthplace / roots: Born in Germany, with Georgian and Spanish roots
Main divisions: Featherweight / Lightweight
Height: 170cm / 5’7″
Background: Greco-Roman wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Main style: Boxing, counters, wrestling, jiu-jitsu

Ilia Topuria is one of the most exciting pound-for-pound candidates in modern MMA.

Although he has a background in wrestling and jiu-jitsu, his most visible weapon is his powerful boxing. His punching accuracy, ability to close distance, and finishing power are extremely high, and he has shown unusually strong knockout power for a lighter-weight fighter.

His career is still ongoing, but considering his achievements at featherweight and lightweight, undefeated momentum, and star power, I believe he deserves a place in this all-time PFP ranking.

Evaluation Points

  • Undefeated rise through the top level
  • Powerful boxing and finishing ability
  • Strong wrestling and jiu-jitsu foundation
  • Potential to become a multi-division champion

Personality / Character

Topuria is extremely confident and carries himself like a star. He often acts as if victory is already certain before the fight, which makes him a fighter who naturally attracts attention.

Trivia

He was born in Germany and has roots in both Georgia and Spain. He is very popular in both countries and has expressed his desire to see UFC hold an event at Real Madrid’s home stadium, the Santiago Bernabéu.

Overall Evaluation

At this point, Topuria does not yet have the long-term legacy of Fedor, Jones, GSP, Anderson, Aldo, or Khabib. However, he has already beaten elite opponents impressively, and depending on his future results, he could climb even higher in all-time rankings.

7. Islam Makhachev

Date of birth: September 27, 1991
Hometown: Republic of Dagestan, Russia
Main divisions: Lightweight / Welterweight
Height: 178cm / 5’10”
Background: Sambo, wrestling
Main style: Takedowns, top control, submissions, southpaw striking

Islam Makhachev is the fighter who represents the post-Khabib lightweight era, and he is one of the most complete fighters in modern MMA.

Based on sambo and wrestling, he shows extremely high-level takedowns, top control, submissions, and cage work. In recent years, his striking has also improved, making him more comfortable in stand-up exchanges.

He is often compared to Khabib, but Makhachev has a smoother striking setup and transitions very naturally into submissions.

Evaluation Points

  • Extremely complete grappling
  • Dominance at lightweight
  • Improved striking
  • Stability in modern MMA

Personality / Character

He gives a calm and composed impression. Rather than showing big emotions, he appears to be a craftsman-like fighter who quietly completes his work.

Trivia

Makhachev has had a close relationship with Khabib Nurmagomedov since childhood and grew up in the same Dagestani team environment. He had long been expected to become the successor to Khabib’s lightweight legacy.

Overall Evaluation

If Makhachev continues to defend his title or achieves success at welterweight, there may be serious discussions about whether he can approach or even surpass Khabib in all-time PFP rankings.

8. Georges St-Pierre

Date of birth: May 19, 1981
Hometown: Canada
Main divisions: Welterweight / Middleweight
Height: 178cm / 5’10”
Background: Karate, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Main style: Jab, double-leg takedown, top control, strategic fight management

Georges St-Pierre is one of the most complete fighters in UFC history.

He built a long title reign at welterweight and had elite-level ability in striking, wrestling, grappling, and strategy. His jab-to-takedown combinations, ability to shut down an opponent’s strengths, and control of entire fights were outstanding.

He also returned after a long break, moved up to middleweight, defeated Michael Bisping, and became a two-division UFC champion.

Evaluation Points

  • Long-term dominance at welterweight
  • Complete skill set in striking, wrestling, grappling, and strategy
  • Excellent ability to neutralize opponents’ strengths
  • Also captured the UFC middleweight title

Personality / Character

GSP is known for being polite and respectful. Instead of flashy trash talk, he won through calm analysis and thorough preparation.

Trivia

Although GSP had a karate background, he developed his wrestling tremendously after moving into MMA. Despite not being a college wrestler, he became one of the best wrestlers in UFC history.

Overall Evaluation

Based on achievements alone, many people would rank GSP higher. I placed him at No. 8 in this ranking, but it would not be strange at all for someone to put him in the all-time PFP TOP 5.

9. Demetrious Johnson

Date of birth: August 13, 1986
Hometown: United States
Main divisions: Flyweight / Bantamweight
Height: 160cm / 5’3″
Background: Wrestling, kickboxing
Main style: Speed, scrambles, submissions, striking-to-grappling transitions

Demetrious Johnson is one of the most technically complete lighter-weight fighters in MMA history.

He built a long reign in the UFC flyweight division and had extremely high-level speed, stamina, striking, wrestling, scrambles, and submissions.

His ability to transition smoothly from striking to wrestling and from grappling to submissions was outstanding. He is one of the best examples of MMA as a complete sport.

Evaluation Points

  • Long-term dominance at UFC flyweight
  • Extremely high technical completeness
  • Speed and scramble ability
  • Also achieved success in ONE Championship

Personality / Character

Johnson gives the impression of being calm and highly professional. Rather than relying on flashy trash talk, he earned respect through technique and results.

Trivia

His nickname is “Mighty Mouse.” One of his most famous finishes came against Ray Borg, when he lifted Borg in the air and transitioned directly into an armbar.

Overall Evaluation

Lighter-weight fighters are often underrated, but in terms of technical completeness, Demetrious Johnson is one of the greatest fighters ever. He may be one of the fighters who best represents the true meaning of pound-for-pound.

10. Mauricio “Shogun” Rua

Date of birth: November 25, 1981
Hometown: Brazil
Main division: Light Heavyweight
Height: 185cm / 6’1″
Background: Muay Thai, Brazilian jiu-jitsu
Main style: Muay Thai, stomps, soccer kicks, ground-and-pound, aggressive rushes

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua was one of the most dangerous offensive fighters of the PRIDE light heavyweight era.

At his peak, Shogun had tremendous attacking power, explosiveness, and forward pressure. His performance in the PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix left a particularly strong impression.

His style, based on Muay Thai, stomps, soccer kicks, and heavy ground-and-pound, was extremely well suited to the PRIDE ruleset of that time.

Evaluation Points

  • Won the PRIDE Middleweight Grand Prix
  • Explosive power and offense at his peak
  • Aggressive Muay Thai-based style
  • Also captured the UFC light heavyweight title

Personality / Character

In fights, Shogun was extremely aggressive, but outside the cage he often gave a calm and gentle impression. He is known as one of the representative fighters of the famous Brazilian team Chute Boxe.

Trivia

Shogun was part of Chute Boxe Academy along with fighters such as Wanderlei Silva. At the time, Chute Boxe was world-famous for its extremely aggressive striking style.

Overall Evaluation

Shogun is sometimes underrated because of the later part of his career, but his peak explosiveness and PRIDE Grand Prix achievements deserve very high praise. I included him at No. 10 because this ranking emphasizes prime strength.

Overall Thoughts on the Ranking

In this ranking, I focused not only on records, but also on prime dominance, influence on the sport, level of opposition, and technical completeness.

I ranked Fedor No. 1 because he stayed at the top of the most dangerous division, heavyweight, for a long period of time.

Jon Jones could easily be ranked No. 1 based purely on achievements. However, considering the issues outside competition and the difficulty of evaluating his overall career, I placed him at No. 2.

Anderson Silva, Jose Aldo, and Khabib Nurmagomedov each showed overwhelming dominance in their divisions.

Meanwhile, active-generation fighters such as Ilia Topuria and Islam Makhachev may rise even higher depending on their future results.
