【BLEACH】Ichigo Kurosaki Forms Ranked TOP 20｜Is Mugetsu, Partial Hollowfication, or True Bankai the Strongest?
Ichigo Kurosaki, the protagonist of BLEACH, undergoes numerous major power-ups as the story progresses.
From his earliest days fighting as a Substitute Soul Reaper to Bankai, Hollowfication, Full Hollowfication, the Final Getsuga Tensho, Fullbring, and the true Zangetsu revealed during the Thousand-Year Blood War, Ichigo has displayed an exceptionally wide variety of combat forms.
The movie Bleach: Hell Verse also introduces the Skull-Clad Version, a special form that does not appear in the main manga storyline.
So in this article, I will answer one question:
“Of all the Ichigo forms actually shown in the series, which one is the strongest?”
I ranked as many of Ichigo’s different forms as possible, based not only on the original manga but also on the TV anime, movies, official novels connected to the main story, and movie novelizations.
However, there is no official “Ichigo forms strength ranking.”
Many of these forms were never directly compared with one another, and comparisons involving Mugetsu, Dangai Ichigo, the True Bankai, Partial Hollowfication, and Skull-Clad Ichigo in particular require a significant amount of personal interpretation.
Therefore, this is my personal ranking based on actual combat portrayals, opponents, Reiatsu, abilities, and the level Ichigo reached in each form.

This ranking includes combat forms of Ichigo that were actually portrayed in official works and showed a clear change in his appearance or abilities.

However, after checking the novels, there was no need to artificially add an Ichigo-exclusive transformation that does not appear in the manga or anime.
Original “what-if” forms created for games or BLEACH Brave Souls are also excluded.

※This is not an official ranking. The top eight forms in particular are difficult to compare directly, so my own interpretation plays a significant role. Movie-exclusive abilities are evaluated based on what they actually demonstrated within those films.
No. 20: Early Substitute Soul Reaper｜The First Ichigo Given Power by Rukia

This is the starting point of Ichigo’s battles.
After receiving Soul Reaper powers from Rukia Kuchiki, he begins fighting as a Substitute Soul Reaper while wielding an enormous Zanpakuto.
Even at this point, he is capable of defeating ordinary Hollows.
However, he does not yet know the name of Zangetsu and has very little understanding of his own power.
Compared with the Ichigo we see later in the series, this is clearly his starting point.
For that reason, I ranked this form No. 20.
No. 19: Fullbring – First Stage｜A New Power Born From the Substitute Soul Reaper Badge

After losing his Soul Reaper powers following the battle against Aizen, Ichigo begins training with Xcution and develops Fullbring.
In its first stage, power begins to take shape around his Substitute Soul Reaper Badge, and Ichigo gradually starts regaining some of the combat capability he once possessed as a Soul Reaper.
However, his Fullbring is still incomplete at this point.
Compared with its second stage and completed form, I ranked it No. 19.
No. 18: Fullbring – Second Stage｜Evolution Into a Form That Covers His Body

As Ichigo continues his training, his Fullbring evolves into a form that covers his body.
Compared with the first stage, his overall combat ability—including his physical performance—increases significantly.
He develops enough power to actually land attacks on Shukuro Tsukishima.
However, this is still not the completed version of his Fullbring.
Therefore, I placed it at No. 18.
No. 17: Early Zangetsu｜Ichigo Awakens His Own Soul Reaper Power

Through his training with Kisuke Urahara, Ichigo awakens his own Soul Reaper power, rather than continuing to rely on the power originally borrowed from Rukia.
He also learns the name of his Zanpakuto:
Zangetsu.
Getsuga Tensho, fired from Zangetsu’s massive blade, would go on to become Ichigo’s signature technique.
Through battles against opponents such as Renji Abarai and Kenpachi Zaraki, Ichigo’s combat ability grows dramatically compared with his earliest days as a Substitute Soul Reaper.
However, he has not yet learned Bankai or Hollowfication.
For that reason, this form ranks No. 17.
No. 16: Completed Fullbring｜Ichigo’s Peak After Losing His Soul Reaper Powers

This is the completed version of Ichigo’s Fullbring, reached near the end of his Fullbring training.
Power resembling armor covers his entire body, and he fights using a weapon transformed from his Substitute Soul Reaper Badge.
It represents one major peak reached through Ichigo’s own efforts while he had no Soul Reaper powers.
However, Ginjo Kugo steals his Fullbring shortly afterward.
Because there is a clear difference between this form and Ichigo after regaining his Soul Reaper powers, I placed it at No. 16.
No. 15: Original Bankai – Tensa Zangetsu｜The First Bankai That Transformed Ichigo’s Fighting Style

During the Soul Society Arc, Ichigo obtains his Bankai:
Tensa Zangetsu.
The enormous Zangetsu transforms into a relatively small black blade, compressing Ichigo’s power and allowing him to fight at extraordinary speed.
His ability to compete with Byakuya Kuchiki’s Senbonzakura Kageyoshi was one of Ichigo’s first truly major power-ups.
However, Ichigo had only recently obtained Bankai and his own body was not yet fully adapted to its power.
Because later combinations of Bankai and Hollowfication clearly surpass it, I ranked the original Tensa Zangetsu No. 15.
No. 14: Berserk Hollowfication During the Byakuya Fight｜The First Major Appearance of Ichigo’s Hollow Power

When Ichigo is pushed to his limit during his battle against Byakuya Kuchiki, his inner Hollow begins taking control of his body.
A Hollow mask appears on his face and his speed and attack power clearly increase beyond what Ichigo had previously demonstrated.
He quickly forces Byakuya onto the defensive.
However, Ichigo himself is not consciously controlling his Hollow power at this point.
Instead, he fights to regain control of his own body and suppress the rampaging Hollow within him.
Because of this lack of control, I placed the form at No. 14.
No. 13: Progressive Hollowfication During Visored Training｜Ichigo Transforming Toward a Hollow

During his training with the Visored to control his inner Hollow, Ichigo’s body begins rapidly undergoing Hollowfication.
He loses his reason and fights the Visored while taking on an appearance very different from either a human or ordinary Soul Reaper.
Because its appearance and circumstances differ from the Full Hollowfication seen later against Ulquiorra, I distinguish it in this article as:
“Progressive Hollowfication During Visored Training.”
This is not an official form name.
There is limited material for making precise comparisons, but the state was dangerous enough that several Visored needed to respond to it.
However, because Ichigo could not control it, I placed it at No. 13.
No. 12: Controlled Hollowfication + Bankai｜The Signature Hollow Form That Fought Grimmjow

After defeating his inner Hollow, Ichigo becomes capable of intentionally putting on his Hollow mask.
His main combat form becomes:
Bankai: Tensa Zangetsu + Hollowfication.
Hollowfication greatly enhances his Reiatsu, speed, and offensive power.
At first, Ichigo can only maintain the mask for a short period.
However, through repeated battles he becomes able to use it for longer and eventually fights Resurrección Grimmjow in an intense battle.
This is one of the forms most strongly associated with Ichigo during the middle of the Arrancar Arc.
No. 11: New Hollow Mask + Bankai After Full Hollowfication｜A Changed Hollowfication

After experiencing Full Hollowfication during the battle against Ulquiorra, Ichigo’s Hollow mask changes.
Its markings become different from the earlier version and resemble the design associated with his Full Hollow form.
However, Ichigo also becomes afraid of his own Full Hollowfication, which prevents him from fully drawing out his Hollow power.
Therefore, it cannot simply be assumed that:
“The newer mask automatically means a stronger Ichigo.”
I treat it as a separate form, but place it at No. 11.
No. 10: Lost Agent Arc Shikai｜The New Soul Reaper Ichigo After Fullbring

Although Ginjo steals Ichigo’s Fullbring, Rukia and the Soul Reapers of Soul Society restore his Soul Reaper powers.
After his powers return, both his Shihakusho and Zangetsu have visibly changed.
Even the Getsuga Tensho he fires in his normal state demonstrates a scale clearly different from what he could achieve before.
I therefore consider this Ichigo substantially stronger than his standard forms from before the end of the Arrancar Arc and rank him No. 10.
No. 9: Lost Agent Arc Bankai｜The New Tensa Zangetsu That Overpowered Ginjo

This is the Bankai Ichigo uses after regaining his Soul Reaper powers.
Both his blade and Shihakusho have changed, and Ichigo’s fundamental abilities are stronger than when he first used Tensa Zangetsu.
He also fights with the upper hand against Ginjo Kugo after Ginjo absorbs Ichigo’s Fullbring.
Ichigo continues using this Bankai during the early Thousand-Year Blood War.
However, Tensa Zangetsu is eventually broken during his first confrontation with Yhwach.
Afterward, Ichigo is forced to confront the truth about his birth and the true nature of “Zangetsu.”
No. 8: Full Hollowfication｜The Berserk Form That Overwhelmed Segunda Etapa Ulquiorra

No. 8 is Full Hollowfication.
It manifests after Ichigo suffers fatal damage from Ulquiorra Cifer’s Segunda Etapa and responds to Orihime’s voice.
Two horns, long hair, a Hollow hole, and markings covering his body distinguish this form dramatically from his earlier Hollowfication.
Its combat ability is overwhelming.
Ulquiorra’s Segunda Etapa had completely outclassed Ichigo’s ordinary Hollowfication, yet Full Hollow Ichigo reverses the situation and overwhelms Ulquiorra.
Full Hollow Ichigo also plays an important role in Bleach: Hell Verse. Kokuto deliberately forces Ichigo into this state because he intends to use its power to destroy the chains of Hell.
However, Ichigo himself is almost entirely unconscious and unable to properly distinguish allies from enemies.
It is overwhelmingly powerful, but Ichigo cannot control it.
That is the form’s greatest weakness.
After re-evaluating the direct comparison shown in Hell Verse, I moved Full Hollowfication from No. 7 to No. 8.
※This form is often called “Vasto Lorde Ichigo” by fans, but the story never officially states that Ichigo himself transformed into a Vasto Lorde. Therefore, this article uses the term Full Hollowfication.
No. 7: Skull-Clad Version｜A Hell-Exclusive Form With Feats Beyond Full Hollowfication

No. 7 is the Skull-Clad Version, which appears in the fourth BLEACH movie, Bleach: Hell Verse.
It is described as another evolution created when the Kushanada—or essentially the will of Hell itself—lends its power to Ichigo, covering much of his left side in golden, skull-like armor.
The main reason I now place this form above Full Hollowfication is the combat performance actually shown in Hell Verse.
Kokuto is an extremely powerful Sinner who has spent a very long time repeatedly dying and regenerating in Hell.
He is also able to use Hell’s chains for both offense and defense.
In fact, Kokuto’s entire plan was to exploit Full Hollow Ichigo’s power to break the chains that bound him to Hell.
Even the enormous Cero fired by Full Hollow Ichigo was unable to completely sever the chains of Hell.
Kokuto was still able to continue fighting while making use of those chains.
Skull-Clad Ichigo, however, immediately overwhelms Kokuto with a golden Getsuga Tensho.
More importantly, he demonstrates the ability to completely cut through the very chains of Hell that Full Hollow Ichigo’s power had failed to fully destroy.
That golden Getsuga Tensho was later given the name:
“Purgatory Getsuga Tensho”
in the PS3 game Bleach: Soul Resurrección.
However, this name was not used for the technique in the movie itself.
Because this article is evaluating the movie portrayal, I will primarily refer to it as the golden Getsuga Tensho.
There is, of course, an important limitation to Skull-Clad Ichigo.
This is not a power Ichigo can normally activate whenever he wishes.
It is a Hell-exclusive power granted to him by the will of Hell.
Once Ichigo removes the Skull-Clad armor, the Kushanada once again treat him as an enemy.
Therefore, if the ranking were based on:
“Power that Ichigo himself can normally use”
there would be a reasonable argument for ranking Full Hollowfication higher.
However, this ranking evaluates:
“The strength of Ichigo’s forms as they were actually portrayed.”
Under that standard, I believe the following feats deserve significant weight:
It achieved a decisive result against something Full Hollow Ichigo’s Cero could not completely overcome
It overwhelmed Kokuto
It severed the chains of Hell
It utilized the power of Hell itself
For these reasons, I rank the Skull-Clad Version No. 7 and Full Hollowfication No. 8.
No. 6: True Zangetsu (Dual Blades)｜The First Time Ichigo Truly Understood His Own Power

During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Ichigo learns the truth about his origins and the identity of Zangetsu.
The being he had always considered “Old Man Zangetsu” was connected to the Quincy power within him.
Meanwhile, his inner Hollow power was deeply connected to Ichigo’s own Soul Reaper power.
Ichigo accepts both as parts of himself and reaches the conclusion:
“They’re both Zangetsu.”
Zangetsu is then reforged by Oetsu Nimaiya into two blades—a long sword and a shorter sword.
From this point forward, Ichigo finally begins accepting the Soul Reaper, Hollow, and Quincy powers he had previously treated as separate pieces as parts of his own power.
No. 5: Partial Hollowfication + True Zangetsu｜Ichigo Uses His Hollow Power by Choice

No. 5 is Ichigo’s Partial Hollowfication during the final stages of the Thousand-Year Blood War.
A single horn grows from his head and Hollow-like markings appear across part of his face.
The decisive difference from Full Hollowfication is:
Ichigo remains fully conscious while using his Hollow power.
During his battle against Yhwach, he intentionally draws out the Hollow power within himself and even combines:
Gran Rey Cero and Getsuga Tensho.
Unlike Full Hollowfication, this is not a berserk transformation.
Ichigo is consciously treating his Hollow power as his own power, which is why I rank this form No. 5.
No. 4: Restored True Bankai｜The Zangetsu That Ultimately Cut Down Yhwach

Near the end of the Thousand-Year Blood War, Ichigo activates his True Bankai, only for Yhwach to destroy it by interfering with the future.
Later, the combination of Shukuro Tsukishima’s Book of the End and Orihime Inoue’s ability makes it possible to restore the blade.
During the final battle, Uryu Ishida temporarily stops Yhwach’s power, creating the opening Ichigo needs to deliver the decisive strike.
At that moment, the outer portion of the True Bankai breaks away, revealing a blade resembling the original Zangetsu underneath.
However,
whether this should be treated as another completely separate Ichigo form
is unclear.
In this article, I classify it as the Restored True Bankai.
Defeating Yhwach is an enormous achievement, but because multiple circumstances were necessary to create that opportunity, I placed this form at No. 4.
No. 3: After Dangai Training｜Ichigo’s Reiatsu Could Not Even Be Sensed by Aizen

No. 3 is Ichigo after his Dangai training.
Before his final confrontation with Aizen, Ichigo trains inside the Dangai in order to learn the Final Getsuga Tensho.
At this point, Ichigo displays combat ability clearly beyond Aizen, even after Aizen had evolved multiple times through the Hogyoku.
The most symbolic detail is:
Aizen cannot sense Ichigo’s Reiatsu.
The earlier situation—where ordinary Soul Reapers could not sense Aizen’s Reiatsu—has now been completely reversed.
Ichigo stops Aizen’s attack with one hand and even grabs Aizen himself to move their battle to another location.
Ichigo activating his True Bankai while in Partial Hollowfication.
After integrating multiple powers through True Zangetsu and Partial Hollowfication, Ichigo goes one step further by activating Bankai.
However, Yhwach uses The Almighty to interfere with the future and destroys Ichigo’s Bankai almost immediately.
The biggest problem with evaluating this form is:
we barely get to see what it can actually do in battle.
Even so, considering Ichigo’s enhanced base abilities after obtaining True Zangetsu, his Hollow power, and Bankai all being active together, this is arguably the strongest Ichigo ever reached in terms of its theoretical power structure.
On the other hand, I also believe:
it is difficult to rank a form No. 1 when it barely has any actual combat portrayal.
For that reason, I placed it at No. 2.
No. 1: Final Getsuga Tensho / Mugetsu｜My Choice for Ichigo’s Strongest Form

No. 1 is:
Ichigo Kurosaki after activating the Final Getsuga Tensho.
This is one of the positions where my personal interpretation has the greatest influence.
The Final Getsuga Tensho is an ultimate power in which:
Ichigo himself becomes Getsuga.
The final attack released from this state is:
Mugetsu.
Even before activating it, Dangai Ichigo was already overwhelmingly superior to Hogyoku-evolved Aizen.
Ichigo then goes even further with the Final Getsuga Tensho and deals devastating damage to Aizen with Mugetsu.
The price is enormous.
After using it, Ichigo gradually loses his Soul Reaper powers.
In other words, rather than being a transformation designed for prolonged combat, it is closer to:
turning Ichigo’s own power into an ultimate attack.
However, one important point must be emphasized:
Mugetsu Ichigo has never officially been declared Ichigo’s strongest form.
It was never directly compared with True Bankai + Partial Hollowfication.
Therefore, if potential power is given greater importance, there is a perfectly reasonable argument that the True Bankai should rank No. 1.
Even so, I place the greatest value on:
the overwhelmingly powerful combat performance that was actually shown in the story.
For that reason, I rank Final Getsuga Tensho / Mugetsu No. 1.
Skull-Clad Ichigo vs. Full Hollowfication: Which Is Stronger?
This becomes an important comparison after the change in this ranking.
If we focus purely on Ichigo’s own Hollow power, Full Hollowfication is unquestionably one of his most powerful states.
It was powerful enough to completely overwhelm Segunda Etapa Ulquiorra.
However, Bleach: Hell Verse gives us unusually strong comparison material for Skull-Clad Ichigo.
Full Hollow Ichigo’s power was unable to completely overcome the chains of Hell, while Skull-Clad Ichigo severed those chains with his golden Getsuga Tensho.
Kokuto was also ultimately defeated by Skull-Clad Ichigo.
Therefore, I consider:
Skull-Clad Ichigo stronger in terms of the peak combat power actually demonstrated in the movie.
However, Skull-Clad is a special enhancement created through the power of Hell.
There is no guarantee that Ichigo could use the same power outside Hell.
For that reason, the most natural interpretation may be:
For power Ichigo can use as his own: Full Hollowfication
For the maximum output actually shown in Hell Verse: Skull-Clad
Because this ranking evaluates the strength of forms that were actually portrayed, I placed Skull-Clad at No. 7.
Mugetsu vs. True Bankai: Which Is Stronger?
This is probably the most controversial comparison among Ichigo’s forms.
Mugetsu’s greatest advantage is how clearly its actual combat power was demonstrated.
Dangai Ichigo was already overwhelmingly superior to Aizen, and the Final Getsuga Tensho was an even greater power reached by sacrificing his own Soul Reaper abilities.
On the other hand,
True Bankai + Partial Hollowfication has the advantage of being reached after Ichigo finally understood the true nature of his powers.
By this point, he had accepted his Soul Reaper, Hollow, and Quincy powers and then activated Bankai on top of them.
However, Yhwach destroyed the Bankai almost immediately, preventing us from seeing its true capabilities.
Therefore, my interpretation is:
If actual demonstrated feats are the priority: Mugetsu
If theoretical potential and completeness are the priority: True Bankai + Partial Hollowfication
For this ranking, I prioritized the former.
Full Hollowfication vs. Partial Hollowfication: Which Is Stronger?
Full Hollowfication is the state Ichigo enters after losing control during the battle against Ulquiorra.
It possesses overwhelming combat ability, but Ichigo cannot consciously control it.
Partial Hollowfication, by contrast, is used after Ichigo obtains True Zangetsu and intentionally incorporates his Hollow power into combat.
Although Full Hollowfication is a more extreme physical transformation into something Hollow-like,
I personally rate Partial Hollowfication higher in terms of overall combat ability.
Do the Novels Introduce Any New Ichigo Forms?
Official novels were also included in the material checked for this article.
However, there was no clearly defined Ichigo-exclusive transformation appearing only in the novels that needed to be added to this ranking.
For example, BLEACH The Death Save The Strawberry deals with the period after the battle against Aizen, when Ichigo had lost his Soul Reaper powers, and events connected to eventually restoring those powers.
BLEACH Spirits Are Forever With You and BLEACH Can’t Fear Your Own World are also important official novels, but they do not exist to introduce new transformation forms for Ichigo.
Therefore, I did not invent or artificially add forms simply because the novels were included in the scope.
Ichigo States Not Included in the Ranking
Normal Human Ichigo
This includes Ichigo at the very beginning of the story and after using Mugetsu.
Because these are not combat transformations, they are excluded.
Ichigo Just Before Hollowfication During Urahara’s Training
Ichigo is also shown approaching Hollow transformation as his Chain of Fate erodes during Urahara’s training.
However, because he did not use this as a combat form, it is excluded from the ranking.
Blut Vene
During the Thousand-Year Blood War, Ichigo’s Quincy power begins to emerge and he uses Blut Vene.
However, it is more naturally classified as a Quincy ability or technique than an independent transformation.
Therefore, it does not receive its own ranking position.
Hollow Ichigo / Fusion With Tensa Zangetsu
Various entities appear within Ichigo’s inner world, including Hollow Ichigo and Tensa Zangetsu.
However, these are not combat forms that Ichigo Kurosaki himself transforms into in the physical world.
They are therefore excluded.
The Blade Resembling the Original Zangetsu in the Final Battle
During Ichigo’s final attack against Yhwach, the outer portion of his True Bankai breaks away and reveals a blade resembling the original Zangetsu.
This is an extremely important moment.
However, because it is difficult to definitively classify it as another new “form” of Ichigo, I include it under Restored True Bankai.
Why Does Ichigo Kurosaki Have So Many Forms?
The main reason Ichigo has so many forms lies in his origins.
Ichigo possesses elements of:
Soul Reaper, Hollow, and Quincy
power.
During the earlier parts of the story, Ichigo does not understand this truth and treats these powers as separate things.
However, during the Thousand-Year Blood War, he learns the truth about his birth and the real nature of Zangetsu and accepts:

My choice for Ichigo’s strongest form is:
Final Getsuga Tensho / Mugetsu.
After re-evaluating what was actually shown in Bleach: Hell Verse, I also placed the Skull-Clad Version above Full Hollowfication at No. 7.
Skull-Clad has the major limitation of being a Hell-exclusive power.
However, under this ranking’s criterion of evaluating the strength actually demonstrated by each form, it is difficult to ignore the fact that Skull-Clad Ichigo severed the chains of Hell with his golden Getsuga Tensho and overwhelmed Kokuto—something even Full Hollow Ichigo’s power could not completely accomplish.
Of course, none of these rankings are official.
Mugetsu, True Bankai, Partial Hollowfication, Skull-Clad, and Full Hollowfication are especially difficult to compare directly.
That is precisely why questions such as:
Is Mugetsu stronger than True Bankai?
Is Skull-Clad stronger than Full Hollowfication?
How should externally granted power be compared with Ichigo’s own power?
remain some of the most interesting topics to debate in BLEACH.
