However, this ranking is not simply about who is the smartest. Intelligence is important, but in DEATH NOTE, being “competent” also means taking action, making decisions under pressure, executing a plan, and actually changing the direction of the story.

1. Stephen Gevanni

Stephen Gevanni appears in the later part of the story as a member of the SPK, the organization working with Near to catch Kira.
He is not the greatest mastermind in DEATH NOTE, and he is not on the same intellectual level as L, Light, or Near. However, when it comes to execution, he is almost absurdly competent.
His biggest achievement is, of course, the complete copy of the notebook in the final stage of the story. That task is so ridiculous that it almost feels like he briefly stopped being a normal human being.
Near’s plan would not have worked without Gevanni’s skill, speed, and precision. In terms of pure “getting the impossible job done,” he deserves the top spot.
Honestly, “Gevanni did it” is one of the most powerful sentences in the entire series.

2. Touta Matsuda

Touta Matsuda is one of the most interesting cases in this ranking.
Most of the time, he is treated as the troublemaker of the Japanese Kira Task Force. He makes mistakes, gets emotional, and often looks like the least reliable person in the room.
And yet, he sometimes pushes the investigation forward precisely because of that unpredictable personality.
His biggest moment comes near the end of the story. At the Yellow Box Warehouse, his shooting ability becomes extremely important. Without Matsuda, Near and the others may not have survived the final confrontation.
He is not the smartest character. He is not the calmest character. But when it really mattered, he acted.
That alone makes him much more competent than people usually give him credit for.
Matsuda may be comic relief, but disrespecting him too much is dangerous. He has a gun.

L is the greatest detective in the world and Light Yagami’s main rival in the first half of the story.
Before the Kira case, he rarely showed his face to anyone. However, when the case demanded it, he revealed himself, joined the Japanese investigation team, and personally confronted Light.
L is not just intelligent. He is also surprisingly active. He takes huge risks, tests Light directly, and constantly creates pressure that forces Kira to react.
His reasoning ability is world-class, but his willingness to act is what makes him truly terrifying as an investigator.
Of course, many of his habits are strange. Sitting like that, eating that much sugar, and operating under that level of stress is not recommended unless you are also the world’s greatest detective.
L is weird, but he is weird with results.

4. Light Yagami

Light Yagami is the main character of DEATH NOTE and the person who becomes Kira after picking up the notebook dropped by Ryuk.
As a student, he is almost unrealistically talented. He is brilliant, disciplined, charismatic, and capable of thinking several steps ahead of most people around him.
His ability to create plans, manipulate others, and escape dangerous situations is extraordinary. Many characters in DEATH NOTE are intelligent, but Light combines intelligence with acting ability, confidence, and adaptability.
However, his biggest weakness is also clear: his pride.
Light is incredibly competent, but he is not invincible. His ego, his need to win, and his poor resistance to provocation often create unnecessary risks.
If Light had been a little less proud, he might have been even more dangerous.
In other words, Light’s greatest enemy may not have been L, Near, or Mello.
It may have been Light Yagami himself.

Mello appears in the second half of the story as one of L’s potential successors.
Unlike Near, Mello is not calm and passive. He is aggressive, emotional, and willing to use dangerous methods to reach his goal. He even works with the mafia in order to fight Kira.
That makes him risky, but it also makes him extremely valuable.
Mello’s strength is his ability to move the story forward. He creates chaos, forces people to react, and breaks situations that would otherwise stay frozen.
He is not a perfect strategist, but he has something many clever characters lack: the will to act immediately.
In DEATH NOTE, overthinking can be deadly. Mello does not have that problem.
He may not always be clean or elegant, but he gets things moving.

Rem is a Shinigami who gives a Death Note to Misa Amane.
Unlike Ryuk, who mostly watches events for entertainment, Rem becomes deeply involved because of her attachment to Misa. She is calm, observant, and willing to act when Misa is in danger.
Rem understands the rules of the Death Note well and often behaves more intelligently than many human characters.
Her loyalty is both her strength and her weakness. Because she cares about Misa, she becomes a powerful protector. At the same time, that emotional attachment can be used against her.
Still, Rem is clearly competent. She sees danger, understands the situation, and takes action.

Watari is L’s trusted assistant and one of the most quietly useful characters in DEATH NOTE.
At first glance, he looks like a polite elderly gentleman who supports L from the background. But the more you think about what he actually does, the more unbelievable he becomes.
He manages communication, prepares equipment, supports investigations, handles technology, and even shows the ability to use a rifle when necessary.
That is not normal assistant behavior.
Watari is basically L’s right-hand man, support staff, butler, technician, and emergency sniper all in one person.
L is the genius, but Watari is one of the reasons L can operate at that level.
A great detective needs great support. Watari proves that better than anyone.

Wedy is a professional thief who helps the Japanese Kira Task Force during the Yotsuba arc.
Her specialty is breaking through safes and security systems. In a series full of detectives, criminals, and supernatural notebooks, that kind of practical skill is extremely valuable.
Wedy helps install surveillance equipment and contributes to the investigation that leads toward Higuchi.
She is not one of the central intellectual monsters like L, Light, or Near, but she is very good at her specific job.
And in DEATH NOTE, specialized skill matters.
Not everyone needs to be a genius detective. Sometimes, the most useful person is the one who can simply get inside a place no one else can.

He may not have the genius-level deduction of L or Light, but he is the type of person every investigation team needs.
Mogi is not dramatic. He does not dominate the room. He does not give long speeches.
He just works.
And sometimes, that is exactly what “competent” means.
Also, anyone who can calmly support Misa’s chaotic energy deserves some respect.

Near is the leader of the SPK and one of L’s successors from Wammy’s House.
He is extremely intelligent, calm, and analytical. His ability to examine evidence, test assumptions, and slowly close in on Kira is impressive.
In terms of pure reasoning, Near is obviously one of the top characters in DEATH NOTE.
So why is he only ranked tenth here?
Because this ranking is not just about intelligence. Near’s success depends heavily on the actions of others, especially Mello and Gevanni. He is brilliant, but his style is more passive than some of the characters ranked above him.
That does not make him weak. In fact, his patience and caution are part of his strength.
Near’s method is not flashy, but it works.
He may not be as charismatic as L or as aggressive as Mello, but he understands the board better than almost anyone.
Near fans, please stay calm. He is still on the list.

That is why Stephen Gevanni can take the number one spot, why Matsuda can rank surprisingly high, and why Near can still be extremely intelligent while finishing at number ten.
DEATH NOTE is a story where one decision, one mistake, or one perfectly executed task can change everything.
